Senior Electrical Grid Engineer (utility-scale RE)

Location: Cape Town

Salary: Market related

Own the grid connection side of landmark renewable energy projects.

Is this you?

You’re an experienced electrical engineer with a deep understanding of MV and HV systems and a passion for renewable energy. You enjoy solving complex grid-related puzzles and know how to keep things on track from development to commissioning. You’re detail-oriented but don’t lose sight of the big picture, and you’re just as comfortable mentoring junior engineers as you are negotiating with utilities. You’re proactive, analytical, collaborative, and always ready to tackle the next challenge.

What you’ll be doing (and why you’ll enjoy it)

You’ll be the go-to person for all things grid-related, supporting solar PV and battery energy storage (BESS) projects across their entire lifecycle. You’ll work closely with engineering, procurement, and project teams to deliver detailed designs, specs, compliance checks, and interface with utilities, consultants and other stakeholders. You’ll lead grid code compliance, connection design, SCADA interface planning, and all the nitty-gritty of substation layouts, transient analysis, protection studies and commissioning support. Beyond the technical scope, you’ll mentor team members, review their work, and help shape future standards and processes.

Where you’ll be doing it

Our client is a global player in the renewable energy space, known for delivering solar, wind and hybrid solutions across continents. With a strong footprint in South Africa and an international reputation for technical excellence, the company is driven by a mission to accelerate the transition to 100% renewable energy. You’ll be part of a collaborative, forward-thinking team that values quality, knowledge sharing, and global perspectives.

What you’ll need

You’ll need a degree in Electrical Engineering, ideally backed by Pr. Eng registration. You’ve spent several years in a grid-focused role within the EPC, IPP or consulting environment and you know the ins and outs of Grid Codes. Substation design, MV/HV systems, SLDs, BoQs, RTUs, and system protection are all second nature to you. You’re comfortable in matrix organisations and know how to manage complexity.

What you’ll get

This is a hybrid role with flexibility, a market-related salary, performance-based bonus and medical aid contribution. You’ll join a team with ISO certification, work across borders, and play a key part in building a more sustainable future.
