A question I get asked frequently is:
“Why did the candidate decline?”
Most hiring managers assume it’s salary.
In reality, that’s often not the reason.
The three most common reasons I see are:
1️⃣ Career progression isn’t clear.
Candidates want to understand where they’ll be in three to five years.
2️⃣ The hiring process takes too long.
Top talent doesn’t stay available forever.
3️⃣ The opportunity doesn’t feel meaningfully different from their current role.
If you’re asking someone to leave a stable environment, there needs to be a compelling reason.
The strongest candidates are evaluating employers just as carefully as employers are evaluating them.
