Communication is one of those skills we often overlook because it’s difficult to measure.
We tend to focus on qualifications, years of experience and technical ability, but some of the people who leave the strongest impression aren’t necessarily the most experienced.
They’re the ones who know how to connect with others.
I’ve interviewed candidates with excellent CVs who struggled to explain their experience in a way that brought it to life.
I’ve also met candidates with less experience who stood out because they listened well, asked thoughtful questions and communicated with confidence and authenticity.
The same is true well beyond an interview.
Whether you’re leading a team, managing suppliers, working with clients or collaborating with colleagues, your ability to communicate influences almost every interaction you have.
The good news is that communication isn’t something you’re simply born with.
It’s a skill that can be developed through practice, curiosity and learning to really listen.
And, in my experience, it’s often the skill that opens more doors than people realise.
