Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Johannesburg

Salary: Market related

Complex engineering problems. Full product ownership. The chance to design equipment that keeps critical mining operations moving.

Is this you?

Engineering isn’t just your profession, it’s your passion. You thrive on solving complex design challenges, enjoy taking ownership of projects from concept through to testing, and are equally comfortable working independently or collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. You’re naturally curious, objective-driven and take pride in delivering practical, high-quality engineering solutions.

What you’ll be doing (and why you’ll enjoy it)

This role offers exposure to the complete product development lifecycle, from conceptual design and detailed engineering through to manufacturing, testing and site trials. You’ll design and improve high-pressure valves, hydraulic power packs and mechanised mining equipment while supporting production, suppliers and internal stakeholders with technical expertise. You’ll also review drawings, oversee prototype development, approve documentation and contribute to design reviews. You’ll enjoy this opportunity because no two projects are the same, and your work will directly influence the performance, reliability and future development of highly specialised equipment used in demanding environments.

Where you’ll be doing it

You’ll join a respected engineering and manufacturing business serving the mining sector, known for developing technically sophisticated equipment that operates in some of the toughest environments imaginable. The culture combines engineering excellence with practical problem-solving, giving talented engineers the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals and make a visible impact on innovative product development.

What you’ll need

A BEng Mechanical Engineering degree is essential, with a Master’s degree being advantageous. Significant experience in mechanical design engineering is required, ideally involving complex equipment, heavy industry, mining, aviation or similar engineering environments. Exposure to SolidWorks, CAD systems and product development processes will be beneficial. Knowledge of valve design, pressure equipment standards, FEA, CFD and manufacturing principles will strengthen your application. Most importantly, you’ll bring strong technical ability, sound engineering judgement and a genuine enthusiasm for machine design.

What you’ll get

In return, you’ll secure a challenging engineering role offering exposure to advanced product development, experienced technical mentorship and the opportunity to work across multiple equipment categories. You’ll become part of a stable organisation where engineering expertise is highly valued and where your contributions will have a direct impact on product innovation and operational success.
