Should you use AI to help with your job search and applications?
Yes…. But….
I received an email where the candidate had copied a template which looks like it was suggested by ChatGPT but forgot to tailor it – leaving placeholders like “[specific industry or field]” untouched.
In the dynamic world of recruitment, artificial intelligence has become a game-changer.
ChatGPT and its kin have entered the arena, offering job seekers tools to craft seemingly polished cover letters and resumes.
Yet, there’s a catch – AI is only as effective as its user’s attentiveness to detail.
The Good: AI can be a powerful ally. For job seekers, it can help articulate thoughts, structure responses, and provide a starting point for compelling applications.
The Bad: The human touch is irreplaceable. Most people can spot a generic template a mile away. Personalisation is key – AI-generated content should be a tool, not the final product.
The Ugly: Mistakes stand out. Overreliance on AI can lead to errors, from overlooked placeholders to content that doesn’t quite hit the mark in terms of relevance or authenticity.
For those on the job hunt, here’s what to watch out for when using AI:
Customisation is Critical: Always personalise AI suggestions. The details matter – they reflect your genuine interest in the role and attention to detail.
Proofread, Always!: AI is not infallible. Proofreading is a non-negotiable step to catch those quirky errors AI might miss.
Blend AI with Authenticity: Your unique voice should always come through. Use AI to enhance, not overshadow, your individuality.
My final thoughts – by all means – use the wonder that is AI but don’t lose the human touch and your unique voice in the interim.
After all – it’s still you who is going to have to show up at that interview and get that job!
