The old saying is that the first impression a prospective new employer is going to see of you is your CV – that’s actually not 100% true. It’s the way you saved your CV when they click on it to open it.
This week alone I’ve gotten CV’s that have been saved with no names, first names only, the word “Template” or “Draft”, the version number (the highest one I’ve’ seen was V24) and many other interesting variants. Often, we then also get other attachments in the application like cover letter or copies of transcripts making it hard for the recruiter to find the doc that they are looking for.
You’ve spent so much time honing your CV make sure you take the extra minute or two to save it properly – here are my two favourite ways to save a CV:
First Name_ Surname_CV e.g. Tanja Faux CV
CV_First Name_ Surname e.g. CV Tanja Faux
Similarly, if you are adding transcripts or a cover letter or any other documentation that was asked for use the same format making it easy for someone working through your application to find what they are looking for.
This won’t be a make or break in you application, but it does make your application stand out with just that little bit more attention to detail and that can never be a bad thing when applying for jobs.
